3 Reasons Why a Center Console Boat is the Best Type of boat for an Offshore Fishing Charter Trip

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

When it comes to offshore fishing, anglers often ask, "What type of boat is best to REALLY catch some fish?" We often have wondered the same thing and considered all types of boats before we launched our offshore fishing charter company Higher Power Fishing Charters, LLC out of Orange Beach, AL.

The answer often depends on your target fish goals, the group you are taking, and the area you are fishing. For us, our passion has been serious offshore fishing, where we can go FAR out into the deep blue ocean and catch some monsters. We wanted to be able to have comfortable and productive 6 hour but also go 18 to 24 hours and get the biggest and most exciting catches where there's a fish story to be told afterwards. There's really nothing like it and these types of trips are lifetime memorable events that bond you closer with the group that shares this experience.

When we were considering what type of boat to buy there were so many options, all of which had pros and cons. For us, the pros of center console boats outweighed the cons by far. Here are our top 3 reasons why:

1. Getting to the Big Fish Fast

When it comes to fishing it's just like real estate: location, location, location! Orange Beach is known for it's blue water, white sand, and excellent fishing. Alabama is home to the largest artificial reef in the United States, covering about 1,060 square miles.

Reefs are great habitat for smaller fish that the big fish feed on.

"Hard bottom substrate is very limited along the water bottoms of coastal Alabama and the addition of purposely designed artificial reefs along the predominantly featureless landscape of sand and muddy substrates has proven to be extremely effective at increasing the biomass of reef fish populations including Red snapper, Gray Triggerfish, Sheepshead, and Gray Snapper. Furthermore, constructing high quality reefs within Alabama’s coastal waters increases the connectivity between inshore, nearshore, and offshore habitats. "

Essentially, as the artificial reef ages there becomes a full ecosystem of smaller fish that attract seasonally migrating trophy fish. The farther you go out, the more contact you can make with those highly sought after fish who do not migrate close to inshore. For your boat to serve you best, it needs to be able to get to these farther options so you spend more time fishing and less time boat riding.

2. Full Access to Onboard Fishing Area

The space to spread out is one huge element that Sportfishing and convertible boats lack. If two or more people are fighting fish the last thing you want to do is fight for space. The center console ensures that each person can safely have access to the space that they need. There's 360 degrees of opportunity; whereas the other types of boats typically are only set up to fight fish off of the stern.

3. Smoother Sailing

Ever been on a small boat with big waves? Not fun. Center consoles are designed to be the Cadillacs of the sea. When it comes to choppy water, size and design matter. Center consoles can cut through big waves and cruise easily up to speed. We chose a 36' boat for this reason. With more surface area in contact with the water it makes for an easier ride, even when the waves are feeling rowdy.
